A great project successfully completed – modernization of the CCGT plant at Bonn North CHP plant
As part of the decarbonization strategy of Stadtwerke Bonn’s Energy and Water Division (SWB EnW), it was decided back in 2018 to modernize and expand the CCGT plant at the Bonn Nord CHP plant in order to exploit technical reserves and enable the future co-combustion of hydrogen. The project started for Dornier Power and Heat as general planner in 2019 and was successfully completed in mid-2024. The plant was finally officially inaugurated in September 2024.
The project included the installation of a new gas turbine, the modernization of the existing turbine and the integration of various technical systems. One of the biggest challenges was building in existing structures, which posed both structural and logistical problems. Despite the challenges, the team from SWB EnW and Dornier were able to overcome the hurdles together and successfully complete the project while meeting the targets. The expanded plant now meets future requirements and contributes to securing Bonn’s energy supply.
