Dornier Nuclear Services GmbH is a member of the Dornier Group, which brings together several companies to jointly assist our clients in the implementation of projects and provide guidance in decision-making processes. The Dornier Group is a global one-stop shop for engineering services with a focus on the infrastructure sector. A functioning and interlocking infrastructure plays a pivotal role in the 21st century and is a basic prerequisite for progress.
The number of nuclear power plants reaching the end of their lives, either for technical or political reasons, is increasing every year. Dismantling nuclear facilities, as well as dealing with radioactive waste and residual materials and treating them prior to final disposal poses great challenges for operators of nuclear facilities. We offer comprehensive know-how to support the entire process.
We have set ourselves the target of enabling our customers to dismantle their nuclear facilities safely and efficiently. To this end, our holistic disposal planning covers the topics of dismantling planning, disposal planning, packaging planning, radiation protection and repository documentation. Our highly motivated team of experts will provide you with solution-oriented and expert support for your individual tasks.
Our disposal planning maps out a decommissioning project through to disposal or clearance. The documents required for release or repository documentation are planned and maintained. We plan verification strategies and coordinate sequence schedules and documents within the scope of the supervisory and repository procedures in order to ensure efficient and easily verifiable repository documentation. This includes a certified team of radiation protection specialists who provide you with optimum operational support on site and train your staff. With our innovative and efficient solutions, we support you throughout all phases of your project. Our experience in the planning of dismantling, disposal, packaging, and the compiling of final repository documentation from under one roof facilitates a coherent and coordinated process – from residual material and radioactive waste to disposal.
Our business divisions
Dismantling variants, technologies, strategies; withdrawal concept, quality assurance, logistics, radiation protection, measurement and sampling concepts, technical compensation measures – these are the main planning aspects to be covered for the successful dismantling of a nuclear facility. In this area, we offer innovative solutions for safe and efficient dismantling. In particular, we pursue this goal through by developing tailored release/release measurement concepts and having them implemented by our trained radiation protection staff.
Since 2019, we have been training radiation protection workers (VGB) for operation and decommissioning in our clients’ nuclear facilities and in cooperation with a certified training center. The aim is to generate a new radiation protection workforce, and ensure rapid and comprehensive practical and theoretical further qualification of the staff following their training, by this means securing availability of radiation protection specialists for the tasks facing our clients in the future.
Repository documentation brings together all information from dismantling, disposal and packaging. This documentation is necessary for waste packages to be accepted by the Konrad repository and transfer of responsibility to the federal government. We plan verification strategies and coordinate sequence schedules and documents within the scope of the supervisory and repository procedures in order to ensure efficient and easily verifiable repository documentation for future, current and legacy wastes. We are very experienced especially in the field of waste documentation. This enables us to produce product-controlled waste products for the Konrad repository without additional handling and re-qualification measures.
Selection of the appropriate final storage containers for the waste is crucial for disposal and holds enormous potential for optimization. In the selection process, we consider the radiological, geometric and technical boundary conditions, check them for the expected or existing waste to be managed and optimize them in an iterative process. In addition, we develop the arrangement planning for the loading of the containers, including a specification of the technical requirements for the equipment needed to implement an efficient and safe process and, at the end, a container suitable for final storage in the repository.
Our waste disposal plans map material flows from their origin through buffering and conditioning up to disposal or release from the purview of nuclear regulatory requirements, considering the respective capacities, locations and time requirements throughout the duration of a dismantling project. The documents required for release or repository documentation are planned and maintained. In order to implement the processing measures, we compile sequence schedules, associated instructions and documents for successful waste treatment, optimized in terms of technology deployment and capacity utilization.
Our History
Formation of the Nuclear Services business line
VPC GmbH’s Nuclear Services business line is formed in October 2017.
Training of radiation protection specialists
In order to meet the needs of the market, training of radiation protection specialists and their operational deployment – initially in cooperation with two nuclear facility sites – are incorporated into VND’s service spectrum.
Formation of VPC Nukleare Dienstleistungen GmbH
The Nuclear Services business line is separated from VPC GmbH on 1 January 2020 and spun off to form an independent company, VPC Nukleare Dienstleistungen GmbH (VND).
Member of the Dornier Group
The newly formed company VND remains a member of the Dornier Group and can thus also apply its expertise in energy-related tasks in the important infrastructure areas of plant engineering and operation, energy and environmental technology, renewable energies, mobility, aviation, water and real estate.
