Lutz Appelt is head of the O&M Services division and also head of the Lusatia O&M Services department in our Power and Heat business unit; he is a seasoned expert in project management.
Mr. Appelt has many years of experience as a project and planning manager for the construction and retrofitting of power plants, systems and system components, in project management as well as in claim and change order management. His activities include owner’s engineering services, responsibility for lots/contracts and handling of projects related to the construction of power plants and plant components.
As a division head, he has extensive experience in staff management and supervision. His customer base includes LEAG, Vattenfall Wärme Berlin AG, Wärme Hamburg GmbH and Vattenfall Heizkraftwerk Moorburg GmbH.
Mr. Appelt studied at the Technical University of Dresden, where he graduated with a degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in power plant engineering. After his graduation, he worked as the responsible shift supervisor for the entire technological process control of a 500 MW generating unit at the Jänschwalde power plant.
Following this, Mr. Appelt worked as a project engineer in process engineering for the planning and execution of the I&C upgrade of the six 500 MW units of the Jänschwalde power plant.
From 1995 to 20212, Mr. Appelt, in his role as contract/proposal holder on the customer/plant owner side (VEAG, Vattenfall) and later also as a specialist planner (VPC), was responsible for the rehabilitation of existing cooling towers and for the construction of all new cooling towers at the Jänschwalde, Schwarze Pumpe, Lippendorf, Boxberg, and Moorburg power plants.
Furthermore, from 2005 to 2017, Mr. Appelt worked in parallel in various functions (specialist planner, overall planning manager for Boxberg power plant unit R, lot owner/contract owner for cooling towers, member of the client’s project management team for the Moorburg power plant) in the planning and overall project management for the construction of the Boxberg lignite-fired power plant unit R and the Moorburg hard-coal-fired power plant units A and B up to the handover of the power plant units to the operators.
Since 2017, Mr. Appelt has been working as planning/project manager to adapt the generating units to a more flexible operating regime and implement LEAG’s BREF measures (installation of activated carbon injection systems at the Lippendorf, Schwarze Pumpe, Boxberg and Jänschwalde power plants); his other projects in this role included the planning for the construction of electrode boilers at the Jänschwalde and Boxberg sites and the planning of a substitute fuels co-combustion system at units Q and R of the Boxberg power plant.
