Detailed investigations of 79 municipal and industrial sewage treatment plants (STPs) located all over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia yielded in depth knowledge on the currently applied sludge treatment and utilization methods and sludge quantities produced. By interviewing the O&M staff and completing a comprehensive questionnaire on site, important information on technical and operational aspects could be gathered. Wherever possible, samples of the treated sludge were taken. 51 nosof sludge samples were shipped to Germany for laboratory analyses. As a benchmark for sludge quality, the German sewage sludge ordinance Abfallklärverordnung (AbfKlärV) was applied.
