In the arid environment of the United Arab Emirates groundwater is a scarce and precious resource. The ever increasing groundwater demand will exceed the resources in the near future and a sustainable water resources development becomes a vital issue for the social and economic long-term development of the country. In 1995 the Government of the Emirate of Abu established the Groundwater Assessment Project in order to enhance water resources and achieve a consistent and sustainable water resources development.
