As a result of increasing development and climate change, floods are becoming more and more difficult to manage with the consequences of severe damage to the infrastructure.

Of all natural disasters worldwide, flooding is the most common one and accounts for the largest number of casualties and the highest economic damage.

In general, floods are caused by heavy rainfall or occurring rainfall in combination with snowmelt. Man-made failure and mismanagement may not only intensify floods but can even cause them in the first place. This includes, among other reasons, inadequate urbanisation, sudden dam failure or deforestation of the catchment area.
However, adaptive measures and integrated flood management can prevent most of the projected damages. Floods are natural phenomena, but the choice of the right measures can significantly limit their impacts on residents and the environment.
