The hard coal fired Wedel Combined Heat and Power Plant has an electrical output of
260 MWel. Moreover, 423 MWthcan be produced on the basis of the cogeneration principle. The power plant thus makes an important contribution to the district heating supply to the city of Hamburg. It was put into operation in 1965 and extensively modernized in 1993. Due to the high age of the plant, replacement capacities have been under negotiation for several years. However, as long as no alternative sources of district heating have been secured, the Wedel CHP Plant will be kept in operation by means of service life extension measures. VPC GmbH supports the plant operator in the identification of appropriate measures, in planning and contract awarding, and during implementation of the measures.
