How can network capacity be increased with minimal investment costs?
At regular intervals, grid operators must update plans for the expansion of their electrical grids. In addition to the rising demand for electricity, one of the factors to be considered is that, in addition to conventional energy sources, electricity from wind energy and photovoltaic plants is increasingly being fed into the grids. However, because these feed different amounts of energy into the grid, depending on the weather, updating expansion plans is becoming increasingly complex.
As Dornier, we recently assisted a grid operator with this planning. It is predicted that in the next ten years, up to 250% more energy will be temporarily fed into the grid than today. The aim was therefore to prepare the grid precisely for this and at the same time keep the investment costs as low as possible.
